  • Performing Arts Medicine

Over the past several years there has developed a recognition within medicine of the unique workload imposed by musicians and dancers on their bodies.  These stresses lead to orthopedic and, in some cases, neulogical damage, that requires the skill of a physical therapist.

Jeff Woodruff is a life-long musician (piano, guitar, brass) who brings the insight of 40 years at the keyboard along with 25 years in physical therapy to the treatment room. He works with the musician or dancer to return them to full pain-free function within their art form.

Beginning in 2009, we will be having a free Performing Arts Clinic the 3rd Wednesday of each month from 10 am to 1 pm.  If you have pain or difficulty related to your performance and would like a free 20 minute consult with Jeff, call us to make an appointment.

One at a Time?

Many PT clinics have their therapy staff shuttle between 2 or more patients in the office at a time.

Our model is one therapist working with one patient. Our evaluations run 45 minutes to an hour in length, and treatment sessions are generally 45 minutes long.

What this means is that when you are a patient in our clinic, all exercises are under the direct supervision of a physical therapist. If your technique is incorrect, it is immediately corrected.  If you are demonstrating a movement pattern which might be contributing to your problem, then that pattern is addressed.  Is the exercise too difficult?  We alter it to make it achievable.  Is it too easy?  Don't worry;  we can make it harder. (We love to make it difficult...)

The results of this close supervision are two-fold.  You get better, stronger, and pain-free. And you do this in fewer visits than if you went to a clinic where you are not as closely supervised.  Fewer visits means less money for you and your insurance company, and less time that you have to spend in our clinic.

"You need to tell people that what you do here is different than in other physical therapy offices."

 ...Jim G.

"Thanks to you...I was able to stand and play my fiddle through 3 pieces at the festival, and win 2nd prize!"

 ...Maureen W.
